Multisensory Learning and Letter (Number) Reversals

At Alphabetic Principles, we understand the challenges some children face with letter and number reversals. Our multisensory approach is designed to provide targeted support and build a strong foundation for literacy and numeracy skills. Explore how we can help your child succeed.

How Multisensory Learning Helps

According to Understood.org, "Using multiple senses gives all kids more ways to connect with what they’re learning. This type of hands-on learning makes it easier for kids." At Alphabetic Principles, we embrace this philosophy to help children overcome learning obstacles.

Common Letter and Number Reversals

The most common reversals are b and d, however, there are others such as p and q, m and w, 2 and 5. Many kids write using reversals because they are developing and might struggle to distinguish the differences. The majority of students outgrow letter reversals by grade 2. At Alphabetic Principles, we provide targeted support to help children confidently differentiate these characters.

Tactile Learning Activities

We use tactile surfaces to help children "feel" the shape of letters and numbers. Students should keep practicing using different tools. This hands-on approach reinforces learning and helps children internalize the correct formation of each character.

Support At Home

Parents can support their child by having sensory materials available after school, during homework time, and even during playtime. This consistent exposure and practice can significantly reinforce learning and reduce reversals.
